Last Saturday I heard a freight train screamin'
Out on the radio
Baptized by the ghost of Casey Jones
Mary Brady waiting for him
Back at the terminal
But she know he’s never coming home

Sunday morning all went silent
Out on the radio
Watched the children tear them crosses down
And along the highway there walked
Moses and Abraham
Hung over from last night’s last go round

Today I watched as the snowfall
Piled up on the interstate
Driving all them highway heroes home
And as they slammed their front doors
And sat awake with their wild eyes
You could hear that lonesome signal drone

Cemetary hours
Break before the dawn
Something is devoured
And Something passes on
And in the dead of morning
The bells ring out the day
With the sound of steps
And the time they kept
Never mattered anyway

Over dark oasis
And under mountain range
Nothing to amount to
Nothing to exchange
Pull this apparition
From the bow and celebrate
For these leap years
And a thousand fears
Follow to the grave

Now I see it clearly
The politics revealed
You know I very nearly
Got thrown beneath the wheels
Songs and conversation
Peddled on the tracks
And we wrestle with
The time we’ve spent
And we’re never going back

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

Never said I was the fault line
Never said you were the rain
Running naked in the nighttime
Chasing shadows in the day

This precious intermission
This dying breath the drowns the dawn
Fantasize every end
But the one your’e counting on

Drink up every expectation
Toast every difference
Say a prayer for all the roses
That die covered in the mud

Like some sentimental movie
Where the hero plays the fool
And the credits slow
And tell us all we need to know

And all the romance and medicine
Won’t steady the turbulent skies
Find that you’re posing the questions
To someone’s replies
We’ve mapped ten million courses
But none of them lead us back home
Guess we’re free to roam

Local Honey

There’s a smokestack in my hometown.
The factory has been closed down
So long I couldn’t tell you what it made.
And there’s a railroad grade right behind,
No one’s seen a train since ’69,
Then in ’72 Agnes washed those bridges away.

Maybe you know how it goes
When you’re one of 1300 souls
In the second biggest town,
Third biggest county in the state,
Up all night with AM Radio
From New York, Chicago and Buffalo,
Up and down the dial to find that song.
Yeah, they were playin’ it on

All my friends have long since gone.
We keep in touch now through my Mom,
And every now and then we see each other ‘round the holidays.
It’s always “How’s it goin’? You look the same.
Remember that time? Hey, what was her name?
I think she’s married, and livin’ in the valley.
I hear she’s puttin’ on some weight.”

But that’s as far as that old story goes,
The silence says it’s time to go,
So we jump back in our foreign cars
With plates from out-of-state,
And we all leave this place we still call home
For New York, Chicago and Buffalo.
Every now and then we hear that song.
We’re still singing along

There’s a monument down on the square
That bears a list of names from here
That went and did their dyin’ over there.
But another new kid on the block
Won’t make the Sunday morning talk,
Or make the best and brightest more aware

It’s so quiet now the road goes ‘round
The new bridge at the end of town,
Or maybe there’s just nothin’ left to say.
I guess they’re proud of all the things I’ve done,
But I could’ve been a better son
If I didn’t have to do ‘em all so far,
So damned far away

Between the old smokestack and railroad tracks,
The never-lefts and can’t-hold-backs,
There’s a faded sign that whispers
“Local honey just ahead.”
That’s the place this street becomes the road
To New York, Chicago and Buffalo.
I’ve been up and down this road,
Andthe reception’s not so strong,
But I’m still playin’ it on.

Going my way
Going my way you’re falling down
Ain’t going Satuday night on the town

Bridges burning
Bridges burning through the morning rain
Going my way your down to the ground
And there ain’t no way you’re comin’ up again

Up and down the road
There ain’t no penny for a desperate man
This life shakes you
Then you’re nowhere

Took a needle
Took a needle to my leather skin
And I slipped off slowly in a dream

Follow footsteps
Follow footsteps in the dusted earth
‘Til you’re walking half covered in a trance,
And there ain’t no coming out of it

Up and down the road
There ain’t no penny for a desperate man
This life shakes you
Then you’re nowhere

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

Pencil me a ticket
I’m typing off the page.
When times get bad the worst way out
Is hidden anyway.

Fire on the highway
And flooding in the streets.
And me I’m doin’ fine,
Which is to say I’m feelin’ mean.

And we’re nowhere
If not in this Neverland.
Singin’ situations that make you feel like
A quarter of a man.
Better take some time,
You better flower on demand.

Thirty thousand doctors
Couldn’t save you now.
I’m riding on the back
Of the tail of this sacred cow

Throwing all the punches
And tightenin’ all the strings.
And throwin’ phoney kisses
To all them pretty little things.

And we’re nowhere
If not in this Neverland.
Sellin’ situations that make you feel like
A quarter of a man.
Better take some time,
You better flower on demand.

And we’re nowhere
If not in this Neverland.
Sellin’ situations that make you feel like
A quarter of a man.
Better take your time,
You better take a righteous stand.

I Should Have Known

Words & Music by Mark Bower

Woke up this morning with a shiver.
Last night the fire must have died.
I saw you standin’ there,
Our breath was dancin’ in the air
Around goodbye.

Comes a time when the resistance,
Forgets what it’s been fightin’ for.
It’s not that I don’t care,
It’s just that I can’t bear
Talkin’ about talkin’ about it
Anymore

I’ve already said
A lot more than enough,
Poured it on instead,
Now I’m tryin’ to laugh it off.
I was born and bred
To leave the better left unsaid,
To leave well enough alone—
I should have known.

Made my way down to the river,
Where the runway meets the sky.
I heard someone call my name,
And I got up and followed
‘til I learned the way
To make this heavy hollow fly.

I’ve already said
A lot more than enough,
Poured it on instead,
Now I’m tryin’ to laugh it off.
I was born and bred
To leave the better left unsaid,
To leave well enough alone—
I should have known.

Took a ride back up the mountain.
There’s still snow on the north side,
But it’s warm enough to rain
And there’s a pale yellow growin’
On this Appalachian gray, brown and white.

I’ve already said
A lot more than enough,
Poured it on instead,
Now I’m tryin’ to laugh it off.
I was born and bred
To leave the better left unsaid,
To leave well enough alone—
I should have known.

I was born and bred
To leave the better left unsaid,
To leave well enough alone—
I should have known.

Another Lonesome Benediction

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

Life goes too fast
Never see one another again
A light goes out
In a lonely building
And the willing give
And the desperate take
And the light turns on

Saw a ragged face
In dirty puddle of mud
Saw a cross torn off
Of a tinted window
Seen the chorus rise
With a holy rumble
And they sing their song

May the road rise up
To meet your steps
May the wind push your back
And the sun shine your face
And rain on your fields
Until we meet again
And may God hold
You in his hand

Damn Fortunate Man

Todd Daniel - Lead Vocal, Acoustic Guitar

Mark Bower - Backup vocals, Piano
Allen Outlaw - Electric Guitar

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

When we were young
Followed the sun into until its sliver
Loaded the guns
And fired blanks into the river

And we danced in the wind and the wild and cared not
But for each other
Then one day the whole world turned to ash

I’m a damn fortunate man
Damn fortunate man

We lived our lives like silhouettes
Darkened shapes against a paper sky
And got whatever we could get
And never cared about the how or why

But the days play tricks on your mind
that the months and years can never recover
And the flame goes out but the wick never ends

I’m a damn fortunate man
Damn fortunate man

Goodbye to all my friends
Goodbye to strangers and to lovers
I only hope we’ll meet again
I only hope we’ll find each other

Can the script of the world still exist as it stands
With a man, or without him
Or does it lose its momentum
And hurl towards an end aq

I’m a damn fortunate man
Damn fortunate man

No Reasons Why

Mark Bower - Backup vocals, Organ

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

Tell me all the things I want to hear
Cry the tears I want to cry
‘Til the bells in every village ring loud and clear
Ain’t no reason why
Ain’t no reason why

Give me all your faith I want to pray
And hope my prayer reaches high
We all know what’s here tomorrow gone today
Ain’t no reason why
Ain’t no reason why

Rain it falls it soaks the ground
Look at me with starry eyes
Seconds run the hours down

Hold you close like memories
Hands they meet on the other side
Have mercy on the man who hides what he can’t see
Ain’t no reason why
Ain’t no reason why

Ghost of a Man

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

I was tired
I was down and I was desperate
And the rest of those things when they found me
I was weak.
Pushed to the limit
Only boulders stopped me from slipping

I was down for a minute, but saw you and told you to smile
I was factored and folded and no longer a matter of time
I went down through a rabbit hole came out the other end
I came in like the rain and came out a ghost of a man.

I was empty
Resisting the will of the devil,
But man was it tempting
It was quiet
The sound of the breath
And the beat and the waste of a heart

I was falling through distance and told that I couldn't be far
I was reaching for you and lamenting the waste of a heart.
I got dipped in the river and welcomed the substance of change
Dipped my foot in the river and welcomed the substance of change

I was dreaming
I was fighting and gasping and bleeding
'til you told me to stop
I was crying
But the tears weren't mine,
Or they were but they weren't tears

I was down for a minute but saw you and told you to smile
I was factored and folded and no longer a matter of time
I came in like the rain and came out a ghost of a man
I came in like the rain and came out a ghost of a man
I came in like the rain and came out a ghost of a man

Every Now and Then

Words & Music by Todd Daniel

Everywhere I go I see the sunshine
Trapped like a canary in a coal mine
Everywhere I go I see the sunshine

Walking down the road we hear a bluebird
Singing us a song that we ain’t ever heard
Walking down the road we hear a bluebird

Big old Mr. Jones he got a broken leg
Makes himself a crutch out by the wood shed
You know Mr. Jones he’s got a broken leg

Nashville Tennessee they got the big guns
No telling what I’d do were I to find one
Nashville Tennessee they got the big guns

Don’t wanna be here when they turn the lights on
Its hard enough to dream inside a time bomb
Don’t wanna be here when they turn the lights on

Every now and then we see the sunrise
Penetrate the lashes of our closed eyes
Every now and then we see the sunrise
